Kim Clijsters recorded a 61 64 victory against Fed Cup debutante Maria Kirilenko to put Belgium ahead in their first round tie against Russia in Liege.
Kirilenko, deputising for Nadia Petrova, was unable to strike a blow against the world No.2 in the first set but bravely fought back from 5-2 down in the second set, breaking the Belgian's serve for the fisrt time but was ultimately defeated in just over an hour.
